Yushau,

Thanks for your very nice and informative article on the above subject.

Reading between the lines, one can agree that the minister is not well informed concerning the position of things in the federal govt colleges.

Firstly, the academic performance of federal government colleges judging from WAEC, NECO, JAMB etc results shows that they match very well the best of private secondary schools. It is not true that 70% of their students fail the annual WAEC exams: instead over 70% of them pass the WAEC exams with the minimum 5 credits required for admission into the university.

Secondly, if a survey is done on the preferences of staff of federal govt colleges as regards choice of secondary schools for the children education, you will surely discover that over 80% of them prefer to send their kids to federal govt colleges instead of to private schools. I am not speculating, my claim is based on discussions that fill the air amongst staff living in Portharcourt where I live during secondary schools entrance exams periods.

Finally, I thank God for the statistics you posted from Prof Mobolaji Aluko's research that only attributes 11% of education budgets to unity schools (salaries, overheads and capital infrastructures inclusive) out of the whopping under-funding of education (8.77% of national budget instead of the UNESCO recommended 26%) by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The Federal Government of Nigeria should simply sit up and carry on with their responsibilities to Nigerians, the future hope/leaders of tomorrow (kids) and the sacrificial workers (the civil servants who from my infancy have always be known as people whose 'rewards are (reserved) in heaven').

Privatisation of federal unity schools or even the deceptive partnering with private education interest groups as it may be so-called, is another evil monster of the administration is about to unleash against the education system in Nigeria.

Kind regards,

Joe (wishes to be anonymous)
